How COVID-19 Pandemic Will Change the Future of Working

The internet is now breaking with predictions of what life and work will be after the coronavirus pandemic. There is no doubt that a couple of things will change, but we have to remember history has shown us we can be utterly wrong when it comes to making predictions. Some of the things and changes happening now will have a profound effect on how working will be.

 

That said, here is what we can expect to be the future of working after the current pandemic.

Working from home

Working from home has to be on top of our list. Until now, companies have been resisting allowing a large chunk of their employees from working from home. Some of the top reasons they quote include confidentiality in the nature of their work, impacts on collaboration and innovation. While all these may be valid reasons, it has to be noted that adversity breeds opportunities. With the onset of the pandemic, the entire world is working from home and embracing it, and this will be the new norm going forward.

 

Trusting Employees

Some organizations ask their candidates to keep their cameras on while working. Going forward, this may be overwhelming and may not work. With unprecedented times, organizations will need to start trusting their employees more. Managers will need to learn how to be effective without exerting their authority on the comfort of their employees. Teams will need to trust their leaders more than ever.

Strong Leadership

While trust is one thing managers will need to work on more than ever, other things on leadership will be adjusted. Leaders will need to be more agile and empathetic and influence on their teams without exerting unnecessary authority. There is an emerging new set of leadership and managers will need to be equipped with new IT skills on how to solve workplace challenges. Training programs will increase and talent management teams will need to pull different resources together to bring the best out of their teams.

 

Rise of virtual processes

 

Working from home has led to the need to transform processes in a virtual world. Human resource processes such as hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation have purely been switched online. Organizations are now looking at other processes that need to be transformed to ensure the virtual process stands out. Having an entire organization work virtually and remotely has caused many organizations to change the way they think about people. New paradigms are emerging on remote connections; Virtual trust is on the rise.

 

Increased communication and collaboration

Office spaces have now vanished into a thin air. Organizations are now looking to transition and enhance virtual spaces. Doing so calls for organizations to amplify their communication and collaboration. The working style of individuals is also adapting to the lack of conversation over coffee and physical meetups. For increased collaboration and communication, there is more to meeting scheduling, using the right channels to communicate, being positive with employees, and setting the right deadlines and expectations.
